The Boy in the Painting The Time Shield Series Volume 1 C D John 9781535236386 Books Reviews

As a failed writer, I am keenly aware of the daunting task of staring at a blank page or screen and endeavoring solely with words to conjure a world that will resonate with readers, whether the target audience is specialized or universal.

Universal resonance is precisely what C. D. John achieves in THE BOY IN THE PAINTING, the first installment in THE TIME SHIELD Series. Having proved herself via previous publications to be a poet of exceptional communicative power, she here confirms that the quality of her prose is equal to that of her verse. The narrative threads with which the dramatic tapestry of THE BOY IN THE PAINTING is woven are spun using language that is both descriptive without being encumbered by an excess of Dickensian detail and wonderfully expressive without being saccharine.

Rarely, though, does anyone other than a pedant deem a book successful based solely upon the author's vocabulary. The literary 'proof in the pudding' is the book's ability to entice the reader not only into perusing its pages but, more significantly, into thinking about the narrative and its implications. In this regard, THE BOY IN THE PAINTING is genuinely triumphant. The characters that the reader meets in THE BOY IN THE PAINTING are artlessly three-dimensional, which is to say that they are people one would not be surprised to encounter in one's daily life; people who do not merely seem but are real. The book's fantastical elements are gripping not because they are improbable but because they are inevitable. Like Oscar Wilde at his best, John writes with wit that is a product of observation and analysis rather than of disinterested commentary. There is in every page of THE BOY IN THE PAINTING an indelible sense of the author's investment in the emotional honesty of the story, and this inspires a similar investment by the reader.

Individuals pick up books for a variety reasons. Some seek escape, some seek entertainment, and some seek enlightenment. Virtually every purpose aside from seeking fodder for negative criticism will be fulfilled by picking up THE BOY IN THE PAINTING. Like artists' great canvases, it is a book that demands repeated viewing each new approach yields new perspectives and insights. THE BOY IN THE PAINTING is enthusiastically recommended to readers of all ages, particularly those frustrated with the assembly-line novels that pass for today's meritorious fiction.
Fantasy adventure - enjoyable - surprising twists and turns - can't wait until the next book in the series is available.
The Boy in the Painting is a wonderful book that I loved reading. Every character had a diverse back story that all came together in one plot. The idea of a portal using a painting is very original and I loved the specifics of how the Time Shield worked. All of the elements that were sprinkled through this book worked perfectly together and I urge the author to continue writing this quality of literature. Thank you very much for writing this book, and I shall be eagerly awaiting the rest of the series!
